Remote – Part-Time or Full-Time Position

We currently have academic editing jobs available for experienced editors to edit scholarly articles submitted to academic journals.

Academic editing jobs are flexible work-from-home positions for those who are eager to learn while supplementing their income. All academic editing takes place on-screen using the electronic documents submitted by our clients, so very little beyond a computer, an internet connection and the expertise you already possess is necessary. Parents can edit scholarly articles between the demands of childcare; underemployed university instructors can earn funds for research as they expand their horizons in their respective fields; and retired academics can help their younger colleagues improve their publications while staying informed about the latest developments in their areas of study.

Remuneration

The rates of pay start at £6 ($8.50 USD) per 1,000 words, and a FREE academic editing course is provided.

All transactions between PRS and academic editors are carried out electronically via email: PRS sends the editor an article (usually in Microsoft Word) via email, and the academic editor returns the edited version in the same manner within a set amount of time.

Qualifications

Among the most important qualifications for the academic editing jobs are language skills. Our clientele is international, so many of the professors and senior researchers who send us their writing for academic editing are not native speakers of English, but they nonetheless wish or need to publish and circulate their research in the English language. To help these scholars communicate their discoveries with clarity and sophistication, our academic editors must be native speakers of English and extremely proficient in the English language.

As a minimum requirement for working successfully on research-based documents, every applicant for our academic editing jobs must hold a master’s or PhD degree in his or her area of specialisation. A familiarity with the writing style, expected contents and standard structures of journal articles and other academic documents is required, and a sound working knowledge of the various referencing styles used in scholarly writing is necessary. Experience in teaching and examining students is always welcome as well.

Since our clients submit their writing to us electronically, usually as Word documents, experience with Microsoft Word is required for our academic editing jobs, and it is particularly important to know how to use the Track Changes and Comment functions to enter corrections and communicate effectively with authors. We receive LaTeX documents for editing less frequently, but a familiarity with that program can also be helpful.

Attention to textual and intellectual details of all kinds is necessary when editing professional academic documents, and precision, consistency and perfectionism are most useful qualities. Successful candidates for our academic editing jobs also respect the writing and ideas of our clients, recognise the need to meet their deadlines at all times and understand the importance of confidentiality when working on unpublished research.
